Mental Discipline
ShimBeop (literally “Spiritual Discipline”) is a course designed to help students attain “enlightenment” or “cosmic reality.” Trainees learn about GiCheon meditation and philosophy, while practicing techniques that will bring about self-awareness and enlightenment.
Ultimately, ShimBeop (Shim: Mind, Beop: Discipline) is about focusing practitioner’s mind on one. That’s how one can get the Doh (the Way, enlightenment) with supreme level of concentration achieved by that. Therefore, if one desires to realize the way (Doh), he should do NaeGa ShinJang in YeokGeun as perfectly as possible which accordingly brings the extreme hardship to himself mentally and physically. There can be no other mind or thought. Below are examples of mental training in GiCheon. |
Sun gazing |
GiCheon Sun gazing for starters is practiced in the static NaeGa ShinJang posture, gazing at the sun in its rise in the mornings. Then with developed and harnessed internal power, one will be able to gaze even at the mid sun for hours with no trouble on the eyes.
However, it can be extremely dangerous for beginners to do it without guidance or harnessed internal power since it can do one's eyes/retina harm. |
Sound Meditation
|
The center of lower abdomen in the body is considered to be the center of the universe in the microcosm, thus producing sounds as deeply from down there as possible is referred to be the sound of the universe or voice of the supreme being.
One can unite itself to be nearer to the supreme being or the universe when one's produced sounds arise from as deeply as possible with clear neutral state of mind. There are three ways of producing sounds in GiCheon sound meditation which shares the same ideas in the field of music.. |
